Kamado Joe Classic II: a superb grill, and exactly how to buy it so delivery can't ruin it

Owners adore the Classic II and dread the delivery. What happens when 250 pounds of ceramic arrives cracked, and the one way to buy it that makes that a non-event.

Kamado Joe Classic Joe II: $899 to $1,199, sold by Amazon

The short version

The Kamado Joe Classic II is a very good grill with a lifetime ceramic warranty, and the warranty gets honoured. The problem is everything between the crack and the replacement: 250 pounds of ceramic that arrives damaged, claims that take two days to approve and three weeks to ship, replacement parts that turn out to be the wrong part, and a lid that will not seal once the bands have been disturbed. We built a timeline from the owners who went through it. The lesson is not to avoid the grill. It is to buy it in a way that makes the first 30 days somebody else’s problem, and on Amazon that means sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners report

The Kamado Joe Classic Joe II is sold and shipped by Amazon at $899 to $1,199 depending on the bundle and the month. If you are leaning yes, add it to your cart now: adding the item to an Amazon cart within 24 hours of clicking keeps the referral credited for 90 days.

Case one: cracked base on delivery, July 2023. On the AmazingRibs Pitmaster Club forum, a member called Tecumseh posted on 29 July 2023 that a Classic II bought as a retailer’s last floor model had arrived the day before with a large crack just below the lip of the base. He emailed the retailer with a photo that morning and separately emailed Kamado Joe. On 1 August, three days later, Kamado Joe replied and agreed to ship a new base on the strength of one email with pictures. On 21 August the package arrived. The box contained a lid, not a base. Kamado Joe replied within an hour of his email and said a base would follow “in a couple of weeks.” Other members in the thread reported their own claims: Oak Smoke had filed three with no complaints, hoovarmin had a post-delivery crack resolved with no questions asked.

Case one, continued: the lid will not seal, May 2025. Almost two years later the same owner started a second thread, dated 6 May 2025. By then Kamado Joe had sent a replacement dome by mistake and then the correct base. He had moved to the new unit and could not close a quarter-inch gap at the back of the lid. He had reset the bands and the air hinge four times. The band sagged at the back and could not be adjusted because its peg sits in the base. He had sent a second email to Kamado Joe and was waiting; no reply appears in the thread. He wrote that the company’s customer service “is not what it used to be.” On 18 May, twelve days in, he fixed it himself: washers under the base to level it, a new air hinge, and a wire mesh gasket in place of the felt.

Case two: firebox cracked at two years, August 2019. On Smoking Meat Forums, bgaviator reported that the one-piece firebox on his roughly two-year-old Kamado Joe broke apart as he lifted it out to clean. He filed a warranty claim. Kamado Joe responded in two days and agreed to ship the redesigned multi-piece firebox, then told him it could take three weeks. On page 2 of the thread, on 13 August 2019, he reported the company’s stated normal window as 7 to 10 business days. Another member, chilerelleno, wrote that the one-piece firebox was a known flaw that had broken for many owners. SlowmotionQue said his own cracked firebox was replaced within days. On 29 August bgaviator posted that Kamado Joe had emailed a FedEx Ground invoice with no tracking number, said the part had been delivered the previous Thursday, and that nothing had arrived. He had opened a FedEx case. The thread ends there.

Case three: cracked firebox base, March 2025. On r/KamadoJoe, read through a mirror because Reddit blocks automated access, an owner since 2021 posted on 30 March 2025 that the base the deflector plates sit on had “cracked down the middle” and the steel ring above it had warped. Commenters described their own claims: one received a replacement within three days of emailing; one has had three fire ring replacements under warranty; one noted that ceramic is covered for the original owner’s lifetime but metal parts only for five years. The advice that got the most agreement was to file a claim while the cracked part still works so a spare is on hand when it fails.

The aggregate. ShopSavvy’s review summary, published 8 March 2026, lists among its cons missing or incomplete parts on delivery, ceramic inserts arriving chipped, warranty inquiries that “take weeks,” no phone support, and “many users reporting slow or unresponsive support.” On ProductReview.com.au, where the grill rates 4.3 from 18 reviews, the two negative reviews are both about a cracked ceramic heat deflector, one of them “ordered 6 months ago” and still not received.

What actually breaks

Ceramic cracked in transit

The base is the heaviest single piece and the one most often reported cracked on arrival, usually just below the lip where the band sits. Floor models and freight-damaged retail stock are overrepresented in the accounts we read; Tecumseh’s was the last floor model in the store. Kamado Joe’s warranty covers ceramic for the original owner’s lifetime and, in every account we read, the claim was approved within one to three days from a single email with photos.

How common: the single most reported Classic II issue in owner forums. When: delivery day, or on first full inspection. Cost: nothing in parts, three to six weeks in time, and the possibility of the wrong part arriving. Kamado Joe covers it. What Kamado Joe does not cover is the week you spend without a grill while a base ships by freight.

The firebox and the fire ring

The original one-piece firebox cracked for enough owners that Kamado Joe redesigned it as a multi-piece unit, and it ships the new design as the warranty replacement. The ceramic base under the deflectors and the fire ring also crack from heat cycling. Owners treat this as routine: a cracked firebox still works, and several keep a spare from a prior claim.

How common: expected at some point in ownership; three fire rings for one owner is the upper end of what we read. When: year two onward. Cost: free under warranty; $90 to $96 shipped from third-party sellers if you would rather not wait, per the 2019 thread. Kamado Joe covers it, on a 7 to 10 business day shipping promise that one owner saw stretch to three weeks and then to a lost FedEx package.

The lid seal and the bands

Once a base or dome is replaced, the bands and the air hinge have to be reset, and the owner who did this four times could not get the back of the lid to close. The fix the forum arrived at was spacers between base and lid during band tightening, which Kamado Joe did not supply; washers did the job. The air hinge spring was also not compressing fully and was replaced.

How common: a minority problem, but it follows directly from the replacement process in case one. When: immediately after a part swap. Cost: a few dollars in washers and a new hinge, plus 12 days of experimentation. Kamado Joe’s response to the second support email is not recorded in the thread.

Support cadence

The pattern across six years of accounts is consistent: approval is fast (one to three days), shipping is slow (7 business days promised, three weeks reported), the channel is email only, and wrong, lost or missing parts appear in two of the three owner cases we read and in the review aggregate. The ProductReview.com.au reviewer waiting six months for a deflector is the outlier, and it is from Australia.

Where to buy it, and where not to

ASIN B01INNA89S is sold and shipped by Amazon on the listing we checked. That is the reason to buy it there and not from a specialist, a big-box floor model or a third-party Amazon seller. Every owner case above went through Kamado Joe’s warranty because the retailer could not or would not simply swap the unit. Amazon’s return policy on a damaged-on-arrival item is a replacement or refund of the whole grill within 30 days, handled by Amazon, with no email to Kamado Joe and no three-week freight wait for a single base. If the “Sold by” line shows anyone other than Amazon, returns and the damage claim run through that seller, and you are back in the timeline above. Do not buy a floor model unless you have inspected every ceramic piece in person.

If you still want one

The ladder on this page is about the shipping risk, not the cooking. The premium rung is the older Classic Joe I: the same ceramic, the same lifetime warranty, less money, so the delivery gamble costs less. The mid-tier rung is a steel Akorn, which cannot crack in a truck. The accessories are the ones every kamado owner buys the first week: lump charcoal, a cover, deflector plates (which arrive chipped often enough that ShopSavvy lists it), an ash tool, and a two-probe thermometer. Buy them with the grill so the first cook is the day it passes inspection.

Verdict

The grill is excellent and the warranty is real; the delivery is the lemon. Buy it sold and shipped by Amazon, inspect every ceramic piece on day one, and use Amazon’s return rather than Kamado Joe’s claim process for anything that arrives cracked. Keep the warranty for year two and beyond, when the firebox goes.
