Blackstone 36 or Weber Slate? What 2,000 owners would tell you before you buy a griddle

The Blackstone 36 is the best-selling griddle for a reason, but owners say it needs babying. Here is who should buy it, who should get the Weber Slate, and why.

Blackstone 36-inch Griddle with Hood: $449 to $599, sold by Amazon

The short version

The Blackstone 36-inch Griddle with Hood is the best-selling flat top in the country, and the complaints about it fall into three repeatable buckets: it arrives dented or short of parts, the raw steel top and painted frame rust within the first season if they are not babied, and Blackstone’s warranty answers by shipping parts that were on backorder for months through 2026. None of this makes it a bad cooking surface. It makes it a product that punishes owners who treat it like a gas grill instead of a 36-inch cast iron pan. What owners report

The Better Business Bureau profile for Blackstone Products (Logan, Utah) listed 108 complaints in the last three years and 32 in the last twelve months when we checked it in October 2026. The ten most recent, all filed between June and October 2026, read like a checklist of this article. A July 14, 2026 complaint describes a hood that arrived bent and dented, with the replacement on backorder and the owner’s own summary reading “NO HOOD REPLACEMENT.” A July 3 complaint concerns a damaged left shelf whose replacement had been on backorder for months. An August 2 complaint describes an E-Series top with a pronounced crown, meaning grease would not drain to the trap, and a refund refused. A June 17 complaint reports rust on the cooking surface that worsened with each use.

BBB’s separate customer-review tab shows a 1.42 out of 5 average across 52 reviews as of October 2026. Three of the ten visible reviews are rust: a June 1, 2026 review says the griddle rusted and the exterior peeled after two years despite covered storage, and two May 4, 2026 reviews report a rusted plate despite regular oiling, and a rusting hood with the painted lettering wearing off. A July 31, 2026 review describes a cooktop that warped within a month, followed by months of unresolved warranty and backorder delays, settled with a $50 credit.

Lowe’s carries the same 36-inch Culinary model with hood and shows a 4.3 average over 2,370 reviews, with 11 percent at one star. The low reviews are heavy on arrival condition. A June 13, 2026 review on page four says “Grill came damaged, parts missing,” with two bent metal pieces and a missing rubber hood stop; Blackstone Support replied three days later saying the warranty would cover it. On page seven, an April 30, 2026 review says the unit “came all scratched up” and short a drip tray, and an April 6, 2026 review says “the hood came bent,” with Blackstone replying two weeks later.

The long-form coverage lines up. Hunker’s October 23, 2026 piece on declining build quality collects reports of missing screws, dents, warping, pitting and rust on new tops, and notes that multiple reviewers of Blackstone’s own griddle-top restoration kit say it does not work. One owner in that piece was told rust is “just a feature of Blackstone grills.” The Daily Meal’s October 3, 2026 complaint roundup quotes a Reddit owner whose frame was rusting and flaking about two months after purchase, another who went through three units before getting one with no damaged parts out of the box, and a third whose missing screw took ten days to arrive before the knobs failed.

On r/blackstonegriddle, a March 2025 thread titled “Rust clean up” shows a roughly one-year-old top with rust spots and flaking after its first winter; the top comment’s advice is to scrub with a cleaning brick and Dawn, reseason, and “clean and oil after each use.” And on the AmazingRibs forum, a September 20, 2026 post about a brand-new 36 reports a threaded insert falling out of the side table during unpacking, leaving the shelf unusable until a warranty claim went through.

What actually breaks

Shipping damage and missing parts

This is the most common complaint by volume and the earliest in the ownership cycle: it shows up before the first cook. Bent hoods, scratched lids, missing drip trays and missing hardware appear in Lowe’s reviews from April and June 2026, in two BBB complaints from July 2026, and in the Daily Meal and Hunker pieces from October 2026. The griddle ships as a heavy flat-pack, and the hood and side shelves are the thin panels that take the hit.

The fix is free in principle: Blackstone’s one-year warranty covers damaged and missing parts, and its support team does reply to retailer reviews within days. The cost is time. Both the July 3 and July 14, 2026 BBB complaints say the replacement part was on backorder for months. If you buy through Amazon rather than Blackstone direct, you have a second path, which is Amazon’s own return window, and that is the reason to buy it there.

Rust and flaking paint within the first year

The top is bare cold-rolled steel with no coating, and the frame and hood are painted steel. Both rust. The pattern in the sources is rust on the plate within the first wet season (the March 2025 Reddit thread, the June 17, 2026 BBB complaint) and rust or peeling on the painted hood and frame within two months to two years (the Daily Meal’s two-month report, the May and June 2026 BBB reviews). Several of those owners say they oiled regularly and stored under cover, which suggests the problem is not purely neglect; a covered griddle still traps condensation under the hood.

The fix for the plate is labor, not money: a grill stone, soap, water and a fresh seasoning, which the Reddit thread walks through. Blackstone sells a restoration kit for surface rust; Hunker’s piece reports multiple owners saying it did not work for them. Rust on the top is treated as maintenance and is not a warranty item. Peeling paint on the frame is sometimes handled as a warranty claim and sometimes not; the BBB reviews show owners who got nowhere.

Warped tops and loose hardware, and the warranty response

Less common than the first two, but the expensive one. The July 31, 2026 BBB review describes a cooktop that warped within a month of purchase; the August 2, 2026 BBB complaint describes a crowned top that will not drain; an October 16, 2026 BBB review says the top did not fit the base and the proposed fix was to buy a new top. Older complaints are about hardware rather than the plate: the 2019 AmazingRibs durability thread has owners reporting shelves that loosen and wiggle, a side-shelf bolt that failed, and a knob that stripped during assembly, alongside plenty of owners with no complaints after years of use.

A replacement top is the single most expensive part on the griddle, and in the October 2026 BBB case Blackstone’s answer was that the owner should buy one. In the July 2026 case Blackstone covered the warped top only to the extent of a $50 credit after months of delay. Expect to argue.

Where to buy it, and where not to

The hero listing is sold and shipped by Amazon, which matters more for this product than for most. Amazon’s return process handles a dented hood or a missing tray without waiting on Blackstone’s parts queue, and that is the single biggest reason to buy there rather than direct. BBB complaints from June 2026 include an owner who paid more buying direct than the retailers were charging and then had a slow cancellation. Lowe’s also stocks the 36 with hood, and its review pages show Blackstone Support responding within a few days, but the parts still come from the same backordered pool.

If you see the same griddle listed at a lower price on Amazon under a third-party seller, check the sold-by line. A reseller listing means returns and warranty run through that seller, not Amazon, and the damaged-on-arrival scenario, which is the most likely failure, becomes a negotiation with a storefront rather than a click.

If you still want one

Buy the Blackstone 36 with hood sold by Amazon, and open the box the day it arrives. Photograph the hood, both shelves and the top before you tighten a single bolt. Season the plate that same day, three to four thin coats, and buy the cover and the conditioner in the same order, because every owner who kept a Blackstone rust-free for years did exactly that. The ladder on this page covers the two griddles that sidestep the rust problem entirely (the Weber Slate’s porcelain-enamel top, and the Pit Boss’s ceramic coating at roughly the same money as the Blackstone) plus the four accessories that make a raw steel top survivable.

Verdict

The Blackstone 36 cooks well and costs less than anything comparable, and the owners who treat it like a giant cast iron skillet are mostly happy. The owners who treat it like a patio appliance are the ones filing BBB complaints about rust in month two and hoods on backorder in month four. Decide which owner you are before you order.
